Lithophanes at the Blair Museum in Toledo Ohio July 2011

This is almost a lost art.  These Lithophanes are so beautiful.  The images are created by limiting the amount of light that passes through a material.  By changing the thickness of the material the amount of light passing through creates a contrast.  The material used must be translucent for the effect to work. 

The last 6 photos of these treasures were created by Hannah Blackwell.  She traveled overseas for extra training.  Enjoy!  We sure did.
